Wheel of Life, frequently asked questions
- What is the Wheel of Life?
- The Wheel of Life is a visual coaching tool that shows how balanced and fulfilled your life is right now. It divides life into eight (typically 6-10) areas, each rated 1-10 for satisfaction, giving an at-a-glance snapshot of where you are thriving and where you want to grow.
- What is the Wheel of Life used for?
- In coaching it sparks self-reflection and conversation, surfaces the gap between where a client is and where they want to be, and helps prioritize which areas to focus on. Coaches often use it early to build trust and set a baseline.
- Is the Wheel of Life the same as work-life balance?
- No. Work-life balance compares only work against everything else, whereas the Wheel of Life breaks everything else into multiple distinct areas, health, relationships, finances and more, so you see balance across your whole life, not a single trade-off.
- What are the 8 areas of the Wheel of Life?
- A common set of eight is Health & Fitness, Emotional Wellbeing, Fun & Recreation, Family & Friends, Significant Other, Personal Growth, Career & Business and Finances. Other versions include Spirituality or Physical Environment, the areas are meant to be adapted to the person.
- How many categories should the Wheel of Life have?
- Eight is the standard, but anywhere from 6 to 10 works well. Fewer than 6 oversimplifies; more than 10 dilutes focus and makes the wheel harder to act on.
- Can you customize the Wheel of Life categories?
- Yes, the categories are meant to be adapted. Clients should choose the areas most meaningful to them right now, such as parenting, faith or creativity, which makes the assessment more honest and relevant than a fixed template.
- How do you fill out a Wheel of Life?
- Choose your life areas, split a circle into one wedge per area, rate your satisfaction in each from 1 at the centre to 10 at the outer edge, mark the level on each spoke, then connect the marks. The resulting shape shows your current balance at a glance. With this tool you simply click inside each slice.
- How do you score the Wheel of Life?
- Rate each area from 1 to 10, where 1 (closest to the centre) means not satisfied at all and 10 (the outer edge) means completely satisfied. Scores reflect how you feel about each area, not objective performance.
- Does every area of the Wheel of Life need to be a 10?
- No. Chasing a perfect 10 everywhere is unrealistic and counterproductive. Balance means relative harmony, different areas deserve different attention at different life stages, and some will and should score higher than others.
- How often should you do the Wheel of Life?
- Most coaches recommend redoing it every 1-3 months, monthly while actively working on an area, quarterly for general check-ins, and at least every six months. The most common mistake is treating it as a one-time exercise.
- Is this Wheel of Life tool really free with no signup?
- Yes. You can fill in the interactive wheel and see your results instantly with no account and no email. A free metaFox.online account is optional, it lets you save your wheel, share a live link with a coach or client, and track progress over time.
- Can a coach and client fill in the Wheel of Life together online?
- Yes. Unlike most free tools, this wheel supports a live coach-and-client session: share an invite link, the client rates each area in real time, and both see the wheel update together, ideal for online coaching and remote sessions.
